A man in West Virginia was taken into custody on Monday following an alleged Christmas Day murder-suicide attempt in which he threatened to “smoke” law enforcement officials, authorities said.
Virginia Beach native Matthew Collins was confronted by Pocahontas County sheriff’s deputies at a Slaty Ford inn around 10:00 p.m. following a call of assault and battery, according to a report.

When authorities knocked on the door to Collins’s room, the suspect told a deputy that he “needed to leave,” a criminal complaint read.
A woman who appeared to be in the room with the 39-year-old suspect purportedly pleaded with Collins to “just talk” with the deputy prior to a “loud commotion” and an order for Collins to step out, according to the complaint.
“You better not come in here, or you’ll get smoked,” Collins responded to the deputies, the complaint added.
At approximately 10:10 p.m., additional support arrived, and Collins appeared to make a final threat to “shoot the Female then Himself,” according to the complaint.

Deputies then made their way into the room and purportedly detained Collins without incident.
Collins is facing charges related to threats of terrorist acts and domestic assault, the report noted.
