Man Who Allegedly Wrapped Dog In Duct Tape Was Let Go After Arraignment

A Brooklyn man has been charged with animal cruelty for allegedly wrapping a dog in duct tape, and he was granted supervised release, according to a Tuesday Queens District Attorney (DA) Office press release.

Thirty-eight-year-old Kristopher Fyffe allegedly wrapped a pit bull’s muzzle, eyes and legs with duct tape, according to the same release. He was accused of keeping the dog and four others in “unsanitary conditions in the back of a van.” Besides animal cruelty, Fyffe has also been charged with five counts of failure to provide proper food and drink to an impounded animal, two counts of menacing, two counts of harassment and registration of motor vehicles/fees/renewals.

Fyffe is accused of wrapping the animal with duct tape on August 23. Two people, including one who purportedly witnessed the incident, confronted Fyffe. Fyffe then allegedly waved a knife at them, prompting the two individuals to call the police, the same release indicates. The individual who witnessed Fyffe allegedly abuse the animal filmed the incident and shared the video to social media.

A woman who saw the video recognized Fyffe and contacted police. The woman said Fyffe drove a vehicle with out-of-state license plates and that multiple dogs were living in the vehicle. Police stopped Fyffe on August 24, according to the release.

A computer check indicated Fyffe’s license plates did not match the vehicle’s registration and police allegedly observed five kennels covered in urine and feces, water bowls containing urine, and no signs of any clean water or food.

Although Fyffe was arraigned, he was granted supervised release, as his case is not eligible for bail under New York state law, according to the same release. He is set to return to court on November 13. (RELATED: REPORT: Prosecutors Charge Two After Deputies Discover 21 Dead Dogs In Boarding Facility)

Queens DA Melinda Katz reacted to the incident, saying Fyffe “gratuitously inflicted harm on a defenseless dog.”

“As alleged in the complaint, this defendant gratuitously inflicted harm on a defenseless dog by wrapping the animal’s nose, eyes, and legs in duct tape,” Katz stated in the press release.

“When police confronted the defendant, they found five dogs, housed in kennels covered in urine and feces, in the back of an unregistered minivan. No animal should ever be treated this way, and I thank those who intervened and reported these cruel acts to the authorities,” her statement continued.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Vice President of Humane Law Enforcement Howard Lawrence also praised the DA and New York City Police Department’s “swift action,” QNS reported.

If convicted, Fyffe faces up to two years in prison, the DA’s office said in the same release.
