Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) expressed disappointment about President Joe Biden‘s shift “to the far Left” during his first term in office.
Manchin spoke to the New England Council in New Hampshire’s St. Anselm College on Friday. Those present were able to participate in a question-and-answer session in which Manchin offered criticisms regarding the president.
“He’s been pushed to the far Left, that’s the only thing I’ve said,” Manchin said of Biden. “But I would love to see President Biden move back to where he came from — where we thought he was. That’s what I’d love to see. And that centrist type — that’s what the country wants, I really believe that.”
Manchin has shifted further away from the Democratic Party in his votes during his most recent term. The West Virginia senator already announced this term would be his last, as he won’t seek reelection. During this event, he reiterated his centrist mentality by lumping himself as one of “us in the middle.”
“Why have we allowed the political parties to push us to the extremes? Because that’s what has happened,” Manchin said.
While protesters against fossil fuels met Manchin outside of the colleges, New Hampshire Institute of Politics, one person asked the senator’s opinion on if, during the 2024 election, voters were to write in Manchin rather than Biden.
“Do what you want to do,” Manchin replied.
Manchin has not announced a campaign for the 2024 election.

Biden’s energy policies have come under Manchin’s scrutiny recently, with the administration’s electric vehicle mandate particularly arousing opposition from Manchin. The senator is against the mandate so long as it includes “China-controlled EV supply chains.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party is fracturing as a result of Biden’s reelection campaign. The incumbent president has three Democratic challengers in Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), author Marianne Williamson, and YouTube news anchor Cenk Uygur.
