Manhunt for escaped DC homicide suspect enters third week

The manhunt for a homicide prisoner who escaped a Washington, D.C., hospital has reached its third week, with police insisting the search is continuing.

Christopher Haynes was originally arrested in Virginia in connection to a murder that occurred in D.C. in August. He complained of ankle pain and was brought to a hospital on Sept. 6, but he later escaped, leading police on a three-week chase.

“The search for Christopher Haynes remains active and ongoing,” a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement Wednesday to the Washington Examiner.

Who is Christopher Haynes?

Haynes, 30, a black male, was arrested on Sept. 6 in connection with the murder of Brent Hayward that occurred on Aug. 12 at 10:45 a.m. in the 1500 block of Kenilworth Avenue, which is near the Deanwood Metro Station in Washington, D.C.

The MPD said in a press release that Haynes is 6’0″ and weighs approximately 205 pounds. He has black hair in shoulder-length dreadlocks and a Washington Nationals tattoo on his neck. Haynes was last seen wearing a black shirt, gray shorts, and white socks with black handcuffs attached to one wrist.

What happened at the G.W. Hospital on Sept. 6?

The MPD said Haynes began complaining of ankle pain from a pre-existing injury, so a First District officer transported him to George Washington University Hospital for treatment around 3 p.m.

While the officer was changing Haynes’s handcuffs, the suspect attacked him and escaped with the handcuffs still attached to his right wrist.

What are the latest updates in the search for Haynes?

There are not many updates in the manhunt for Haynes. The MPD said they’ve received numerous tips reporting sightings of Haynes, but officials have no pictures or details of where he might have been seen since he escaped the hospital.

Surveillance footage from a residence near the hospital captured Haynes in the backyard. He was not wearing any shoes and kept looking around the area.

“Finding Christopher Haynes is a top priority for the Metropolitan Police Department,” the department said. “The search remains active and ongoing and MPD is working closely with our local and federal partners to ensure that Haynes is brought to justice.”

The department is offering a $30,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Haynes.
