Former President George W. Bush speechwriter Marc Thiessen said on Fox News following President-elect Donald Trump‘s victory speech Tuesday night that it was “shameful” that Vice President Kamala Harris had not called her opponent to congratulate him.
“Having written presidential speeches, the thing that jumped out at me is that most of the speeches begin with ‘I just received a call from my opponent who graciously conceded the election. I thanked her and congratulated her on a well-thought campaign,’” he said to the Fox News election night panel.
He added, “Has Kamala Harris not called him?”
“By the way, why is she not speaking tonight? She lost,” Thiessen said. “What? Did she just go to bed? Wisconsin is called. It is over. Why is she not coming out and conceding? It is shameful.”
Harris campaign co-Chairman Cedric Richmond told supporters waiting for Harris on Tuesday night at Howard University that they would not be hearing from her on election night.
“We still have votes to count, we still have states that have not been called yet,” Richmond said to the crowd. “But you will hear from her tomorrow. She will be back here tomorrow.”

The Trump campaign confirmed to reporters Wednesday afternoon that Harris had called the former president to congratulate him.
“President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke by phone earlier today where she congratulated him on his historic victory. President Trump acknowledged Vice President Harris on her strength, professionalism, and tenacity throughout the campaign, and both leaders agreed on the importance of unifying the country,” Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement.
