Marjorie Taylor Greene calls for new speaker ahead of spending deal vote – Washington Examiner

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) became one of the first House Republicans on Friday to float the idea of replacing Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) as the chamber prepares to vote on its final set of spending bills for the fiscal year.

“We need a Speaker of the House who will fight to secure America’s border at all cost! Not one that passes a trillion dollar Democrat wish list that continues the border invasion, funds the weaponized government, and breaks our own conference rules,” Greene wrote in a post on X.

“I’m done with this one,” she added.

Greene joins several hard-line conservatives who have expressed frustration and outrage at Johnson over the final six appropriations bills, which need to pass on Friday to avoid a partial government shutdown.

Many members of the House Freedom Caucus said on Friday that they will be hard nos on the bill, while general reluctance within the conference is stoking fears that House GOP leadership may not have the votes to push the spending deal over the finish line.

A motion to vacate, once a rare move to topple the House’s leader, has become a point of leverage for hard-line Republicans. Last fall, eight GOP members, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), joined Democrats in ousting former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

When asked on Steve Bannon‘s War Room podcast if she’ll bring a motion to vacate against Johnson, who assumed the speakership in October, she said, “Stay tuned.”

“We are going to be making decisions on a minute-by-minute basis today, and I urge you to watch and see what happens,” Greene said.

Freedom Caucus members have been relatively silent on whether they plan to move forward with a motion to vacate against Johnson.

On Thursday, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) told reporters that “Mike’s a friend, but this is a mistake.”

“I just disagree vehemently with this bill, and he knows it,” Roy said. “We’ve talked about it. You know, once whatever happens this week happens, we got to get busy figuring out what’s next. But this bill is a failure. And Republicans should reject it.”
