Massive explosion in Kenya kills at least two and injures over 160

A massive explosion in Kenya killed at least two people and injured over 160 others, with the casualty count expected to rise.

The blast occurred in Nairobi, the country’s capital. According to government spokesman Isaac Mwaura, a fire broke out at a gas container facility, spreading to the gas cylinders and causing a catastrophic explosion. Videos posted on social media show the smoke engulfing the city’s skyline.

“There has been a fire outbreak at Kentainers Company ltd near Kabansora in Embakasi, Nairobi,” Mwaura said. “The company was refilling gas cylinders when fire broke out and several people injured and rushed to hospital. The building hosting the company is badly damaged. The cause of the fire remains unknown.”

Kenyan figures critical of the government, such as blogger Robert Alai, were quick to blame the government for the explosion.

“NEMA directors, including the Director General, should be arrested and charged with criminal neglect over the Embakasi Fire,” Alai declared. “Nairobi City County planning officers led by the CECM and Chief Officer should be arrested and charged too. Greed is killing our people. Why must families be burnt in their sleep and life goes on as usual?”

He then demanded that Kenyan President William Ruto visit the blast site.
