Immigrants illegally entering the United States can look forward to the opening of a new shelter in El Paso, Texas.

Officials behind the new space for immigrants hope its opening will help alleviate the border crisis ailing El Paso, according to a report.

“We’re looking forward to just the expansion of supporting this very regional effort,” Executive Director of the Border Servant Corps Kari Lenander said.

The space will be composed of a new 39,000-square-foot facility in east El Paso near an airport, and it will have the capacity to house 400 immigrants per day, the report noted.

The Annunciation House and the city of El Paso worked with the Border Servant Corps to see the new shelter become a reality.

“We’ve all seen the migration trends over the years, and we recognized there’s more need for 24/7 services, and that’s what this facility will help do, support those services in this region,” Lenander said.

Lenander’s group has another shelter in Las Cruces, and a team in El Paso works at airports in the area to guide immigrants, according to the report.

Furthermore, a team at the Paso del Norte International Bridge immediately offers immigrants assistance when they enter the country.

“We receive folks who are coming over the port of entry through CBP One, we provide them reception, USCIS has co-located with us to start the work authorization process, which is just a game-changer,” Lenander said.

The new shelter will provide an even greater capacity to help immigrants, she added.

“There will be spaces for welcome, for intake, we’ll have spaces for legal providers to come in and provide assistance to our guests,” Lenander said. “We’re really grateful to be here to be expanding services in El Paso. There are a lot of amazing partners here in El Paso.”

It is anticipated the shelter will be opened next month.
