The actor had long battled a drug and alcohol addiction prior to his death. In 2022, Perry published Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, an autobiography detailing his struggles, in which he lamented that fans could easily tell what drug he was hooked on based on his weight at various times.
