Max Miller says it’s time to ‘reevaluate all leadership’ as Scalise receives nominee nod

Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) said the House speaker election should be a “time to reevaluate all leadership” as House Republicans vote on selecting a successor to ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA)

Republicans selected House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) to replace McCarthy, who was removed last week. However, it’s unclear if Scalise will have enough votes on the floor to win the gavel.

“I never said [Scalise] is the wrong leader,” Miller said. “I just think right now we need to reevaluate all leadership.”

Miller said he will not vote for anyone but Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) on the floor. He said until Jordan takes himself out of the race, he won’t even consider voting for Scalise or any other candidate. But even then, he’s undecided as to whether he’ll vote for Scalise.

“If Jim Jordan does not get the majority within that room,” Miller said, “I will go down to the House floor and continue to vote for Jim Jordan.”

Eight Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), and all Democrats voted to vacate McCarthy as speaker. Several House GOP members have expressed disappointment and anger at the eight representatives of their own party, with some looking to reinstate McCarthy as speaker.

McCarthy said in his farewell speech that he would not seek the speaker’s gavel again and asked members not to nominate him for the position.

“You know what, we just had 6% of the conference dictate the speaker of the House,” Miller said. “So why would I let 51% dictate the next speaker? The numbers don’t make any sense across the board.“
