Milwaukee the ‘most secure place on the face of the planet’ as RNC begins, Wisconsin GOP chairman says – Washington Examiner

The chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin and the mayor of Milwaukee are calming down fears of potential security breaches at the Republican National Convention following former President Donald Trump’s attempted assassination.

Trump arrived in Milwaukee for the first day of the convention following his attempted assassination on Saturday, which has led to many calling for increased security measures at the convention. Trump is set to become the Republican Party’s presidential nominee on Monday.

When speaking on CNN News Central, Wisconsin GOP Chairman Brian Schimming dismissed concerns that Milwaukee would have any security problems, saying downtown Milwaukee is the “most secure place on the face of the planet.”

“This area is secure, and the convention is going to go off as planned. But as with the whole nation, Pennsylvania is on our mind,” he said.

According to the Trump campaign, there will be an increase in security at the convention as a result of the attempted assassination.

“We are enhancing the armed security presence with 24/7 officers on-site. Additional security assessments will be in place,” the Trump campaign said. “The RNC Convention will continue as planned in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson also assured visitors and residents alike that proper security measures were in place.

“You’ve seen some of these preparations up close,” he said. “And there’s a lot going on behind the scenes as well.”

Gov. Tony Evers (D-WI) called for guns to be banned in the “soft perimeter” surrounding the convention. Evers’s emergency request was shot down, as Wisconsin law allows people to carry within the perimeter. While Johnson stopped short of directly calling for firearms to be banned near the convention at Fiserv Forum, he said his hands were tied on the matter.

“If there were an opportunity for us to be able to restrict access to those weapons, especially, I would love to see something like that. However, state law supersedes local ordinances, so we can’t even pass anything that would prohibit the use or the access around firearms in this soft security perimeter that we have,” Johnson said.

“I’ve said ad nauseam as mayor of the city and leader of the city that there’s far too many people who have access to deadly weapons who should not have access to deadly weapons,” he said.

Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies have been deployed to Milwaukee to help secure the convention. At least 44 police departments committed to sending their officers to Wisconsin this week.

“We’re working as hard as we can, around the clock, putting forth the effort that’s necessary, not only for the RNC but for our city,” Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said. “We are taking care of this city.”

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said she was “confident” in the current security measures at the event.

“I am confident in the security plan our Secret Service RNC coordinator and our partners have put in place, which we have reviewed and strengthened in the wake of Saturday’s shooting,” Cheatle said in a statement.
