Monkees singer Micky Dolenz is honoring one of his greatest fans, the trailblazing ’80s and ’90s rock band R.E.M., by blowing up the internet with his version of the group’s chart-topping song “Shiny Happy People.”

7A Records released a music video on YouTube on Wednesday of the song to promote Dolenz’s R.E.M. tribute album Dolenz Sings R.E.M. It described the upcoming album as “fresh and completely new arrangements” of some of the rock band’s most popular songs. The album will include a cover of the band’s debut song “Radio Free Europe” and its 1992 hit “Man on the Moon.”

“This EP reaffirms my long-held conviction that a solid recording always begins with solid material. You don’t get much more solid than R.E.M. What a joy to sing these classics and honor a team of outstanding writers,” Dolenz said in a statement about his album debuting on Nov. 3.

R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe called the new version of the song “incredible” and went on to praise the entire tribute album.

“These songs are absolutely incredible. Micky Dolenz covering R.E.M. Monkees style, I have died and gone to heaven. This is really something,” Stipe reportedly said in a statement.

He added, “I am finally complete.”

The band has cited the Monkees as an influence on its musical style.

The release of the tribute album this fall coincides with the publication of Dolenz’s book, I’m Told I Had A Good Time — The Micky Dolenz Archives, Volume One. It is a 500-page book of previously unpublished images from the singer’s life and career. The newly released music video “Shiny Happy People” is a montage of images of the musician.
