The Montana State Library Commission voted to cut all ties with the American Library Association on Tuesday, citing an inability to continue associating with an organization led by a self-described ” Marxist .”
At a meeting last month, the Montana State Library Commission reviewed a tweet from Emily Drabinski, the president-elect of the American Library Association, in which Drabinski described herself as a “Marxist lesbian.”

Drabinski’s tweet was from April 2022, shortly after she was elected president of the association. She did not take office until this month.
“I just cannot believe that a Marxist lesbian who believes that collective power is possible to build and can be wielded for a better world is president elect of ALA,” the tweet says. “I am so excited for what we will do together. Solidarity. And my mom is so proud. I love you mom.”
