Morning Joe warns Trump will ‘wipe out’ democracy if elected again

The hosts of MSNBC’s Morning Joe warned that former President Donald Trump will “wipe out” democracy in the United States should he become president again in 2024.

The two hosts, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, were discussing leaders in Europe, with Scarborough comparing Trump to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Scarborough stated that people should not be concerned about Trump “lining up people against the walls and having them shot” but about Trump looking to Orban as an inspiration instead, as the Hungarian leader has “bragged about having an illiberal democracy.”

“And he’s wiped out the judiciary. He’s wiped out the free press, and, Anne, I suppose, that’s probably what Donald Trump will look for as a blueprint if he gets elected again,” Scarborough said.

Anne Applebaum, a journalist who was being interviewed by the hosts, stated that “there are plans floating around” indicating Trump will eliminate the civil service in the U.S., replacing it with people who are completely loyal to him, such as family or relatives of his family, which Applebaum described as “incredibly dangerous.”

Scarborough’s comparison of Trump to Orban comes after Orban endorsed the former U.S. president, calling Trump “the man who can save the Western world.” Trump thanked the Hungarian prime minister in a post on social media, calling him a “great leader and man.”

Trump, who announced his candidacy in the 2024 presidential election last year, is running against several other Republicans in the primary, including Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, and business entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. Should Trump win the Republican Party’s nomination, it would set up a rematch between him and President Joe Biden.

In a recent CNBC All-America Economic Survey, Trump bested Biden 46% to 42%. Trump’s lead in the polling comes as Biden is dealing with multiple problems, both domestic and international, including the war between Israel and the Hamas terrorist group.
