MSNBC announced that Andrea Mitchell will leave her role as a network anchor after 16 years in the role.
In sharing the news, the network said Mitchell will transition to a “broader role at NBC News.”
“In my heart and soul, I am first and foremost a reporter and a storyteller,” Mitchell said in a video shared online alongside the network’s announcement. “It’s why when we launched this program in 2008, now the longest-running daytime program on MSNBC, we called it Andrea Mitchell Reports. Our hour has always been driven by my reporting on politics and foreign policy, as well as the reporting of the best correspondents and analysts in the field.”
“And after 16 years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most, more connecting, listening, and reporting in the field,” she continued.
Andrea Mitchell has decided to shift from her daily anchoring duties on MSNBC to a broader role at NBC News. The legendary and trailblazing reporter remains Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent and Chief Washington Correspondent.

Mitchell will continue in her role as chief foreign affairs correspondent and chief Washington correspondent for MSNBC and NBC News, but she shared that she desires to cover those stories from a “different vantage point” while traveling and no longer from behind the anchor desk.
“So, come sometime next year, you will see me in your living rooms, you’ll still see me on your mobile devices and other platforms but perhaps also in your hometowns and cities still asking the questions to get the answers that you deserve,” she said.
Mitchell said she will make the transition away from the anchor desk following the inaugural of the next president in January.
She called the plans for her new role “exciting.”
“I look forward to sharing more with you after the inaugural about all our plans, exciting new plans, and bringing you my reporting in new ways right here across all of NBC News and MSNBC for many years to come,” Mitchell said.
Over the years, Mitchell has been criticized for her left-leaning bias.
In February 2023, she accused Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) of shying away from teaching students about slavery in Florida’s schools. After receiving pushback, she issued a statement calling her claims “imprecise.”

Earlier this month, Mitchell recently appeared on Meet the Press to offer analysis and concern regarding black and white men and businesses favoring former President Donald Trump. She did not, however, discuss gender gap concerns about women who support Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I think there’s misogynation in all of this, black and white men, big problem. But also, the business world, they don’t think she is serious,” Mitchell said.
