MTG details the case against Mayorkas in first impeachment hearing

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) made a detailed case for House Republicans to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, accusing the Cabinet member of lying 20 times about the border crisis as 10 million immigrants have illegally entered the country.

Greene, who has led the GOP effort to force out the DHS secretary and introduced articles of impeachment, gave a fiery rundown during the House Homeland Security Committee’s hearing Wednesday of the offenses that she claimed Mayorkas has committed across his three years in office while serving under President Joe Biden.

“Here’s some of Secretary Mayorkas’s effective results: approximately 10 million illegal border crossers from over 160 countries have invaded the United States since President Biden took office and Secretary Mayorkas has started his job,” Greene said.

Greene, a second-term lawmaker, charged Mayorkas with poorly leading the 260,000 employees of the department in such a way that has had huge financial and safety implications on Americans.

Approximately 73,000 immigrants arrested at the border since 2021 were identified as being “special interest aliens,” she said, a reference to the legal term for someone whose travel patterns make them a potential national security risk to the U.S. or its interests, according to DHS criteria.

States and local governments spent more than $115 billion in 2023, while the national cost topped $182 billion, Greene said.

“That is an unbelievable expense for the American taxpayers,” said Greene.

“So what are the results of Secretary Mayorkas’s job performance? He’s violated the Secure Fence Act of 2006 by not maintaining operational control of our border. He’s violated the Immigration and Nationality Act. He has violated the INA by implementing catch-and-release policies when federal law specifically mandates the detention of inadmissible aliens. … He’s violated the guarantee clause set forth in Article Four Section Four of the Constitution, which requires the federal government to protect states against invasion.”

But Greene’s biggest grievance was how Mayorkas has defended his job in office.

“There have been over 20 occasions that Secretary Mayorkas has claimed that the border is either closed or secure starting even back in 2021 when he is on record stating the border is secure, the border is closed,” said Greene. “He stated to Fox News’s Peter Doocy, ‘The border is closed.’

“Then he stated again to congressman (August) Pfluger here on this committee. The congressman asked him. He said, ‘The border is secure. We are, we are executing our plan.’ As he stated to congressman Pfluger, Secretary Maryokas said, ‘I have been very clear and unequivocal in that regard. Congressman, the border is no less secure than it was previously,’” Greene continued. “He also stated to congressman Michael Guest on our committee when he was asked by congressman Guest, ‘Do you maintain today in light of the statements made by [former Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz] the border is secure?’ Secretary Mayorkas replied, ‘Congressman, I stand by my prior assessment because indeed, I define it as maximizing the resources we have to deliver the most effective results.’”

Greene finished by asking the three Republican witnesses, all GOP state attorneys general, if they believed Mayorkas had committed a crime that warranted his removal.

Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen replied, “Absolutely.”

“He has failed to perform and is culpably inefficient, yes,” said Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey said Mayorkas was “acting in violation of the law and constitutional order.”

The DHS strongly criticized House Republicans in their effort to impeach Mayorkas and issued a statement late Tuesday that personally attacked Greene.

“From day one, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the leader behind their impeachment efforts, and [House Homeland Security Committee] Chairman Mark Green have admitted that their ‘investigation’ had a pre-determined and “guaranteed” result: impeachment,” the DHS said in a statement.

The department stood by Mayorkas’s nearly three years in office and praised his leadership as a “dedicated public servant who has spent decades, both as a federal prosecutor and at DHS, working to keep his fellow Americans safe.”
