MTG predicts ‘end of our republic’ as GOP House members head for the exits – Washington Examiner

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) predicted Republicans would soon lose their majority in the House, which would bring the “end of our republic,” because House Republicans keep departing in the middle of the year.

Greene said she would not be held responsible if House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) became the next House speaker, claiming Republicans such as Reps. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Ken Buck (R-CO) hold more blame for leaving in the middle of the term.

“I am not going to be responsible for Hakeem Jeffries being speaker of the House,” Greene told Real America’s Voice on Tuesday. “I am not going to be responsible for a Democratic majority taking over our Republican majority. That lies squarely, squarely, on the shoulders of these Republicans that are leaving early because they don’t have the intestinal fortitude to handle the real fight and the responsibility that comes with leadership and the end of our republic when our country is nearly destroyed.”

Holding Mike Johnson accountable isn’t going to give us a speaker Jeffries.

What’s going to give us a speaker Jeffries is selfish Republicans like Mike Gallagher leaving Congress early.

The comment comes as Gallagher announced he is leaving the House on April 19, which would leave his seat vacant until after the general election. Buck served his last day in Congress last week. Their departures will bring Republicans down to a one-vote majority.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy also left Congress this term after he was ousted from his role last October. If Republicans lose the House before November, Democrats would control the executive and legislative branches of the federal government.

“It’s just simple math. The more Republicans, like Mike Gallagher, that resign and leave early — guess what, that means we have less Republicans in the House,” Greene said. “So, every time a Mike Gallagher or a Ken Buck leaves early, that brings our numbers down and brings us dangerously closer to being in the minority. It’s not Marjorie Taylor Greene that is saying the inconvenient truth and forcing everyone to wake up and realize Republican voters are done with us doing this kind of crap that we did last week.”

Greene was criticized by her colleagues after she filed a motion to vacate the chair against Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) last week. However, Greene said the filing was only meant to be a warning to the speaker and that she was not planning to call for a vote on the motion in the near future.

Several Democrats have also expressed a willingness to help Johnson survive the vote if one is called, especially if he brings the Ukraine aid bill to the floor. But Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) warned that saving Johnson would not be free.
