MTG slams eight Republicans who tabled Mayorkas impeachment: ‘How many more Americans have to die’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) attacked the eight Republicans who voted to table her articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Greene claimed the “excuses” for sending the impeachment resolution, which was rejected by the House on Monday, back to the shelf were “pathetic.” The resolution accused Mayorkas of “willful admittance of border crossers” and claimed he violated the Secure Fence Act of 2006.

“To the 8 Republicans who voted with Dems to kill the impeachment of Mayorkas: How many more Americans have to die while you claim impeachment has to be done the ‘right way?'” Greene posted to X, formerly known as Twitter. “My articles have been rotting in committee and now go back on the shelf. Your excuses are pathetic!”

Reps. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), Tom McClintock (R-CA), John Duarte (R-CA), Virginia Foxx (R-NC), Darrell Issa (R-CA), Cliff Bentz (R-OR), Ken Buck (R-CO), and Michael Turner (R-OH) voted with all Democrats to refer the resolution to committee instead of taking it to a floor vote.

McClintock defended his vote on Mayorkas on Monday, claiming that although he does not support the secretary, impeachments should only be tied to crimes and not political disagreements.

“To remove an official by impeachment, it must be for a clearly defined crime and it must be a ‘high’ crime, meaning one related to the official’s duties,” McClintock said in a statement. “The House made a mockery of impeachment twice during the last session of Congress. We must not allow the left to become our teachers.”

He continued, “If these clear constitutional principles are not restored, now, that power will be just one election from being turned against the constitutionalists on the Supreme Court, or upon any future Republican administration.”

The crisis at the southern border has been a sticking point for Republicans, as illegal border crossings remain at historic highs. More than 240,000 noncitizens attempted to enter the country illegally by walking around ports of entry or did not have the proper documents to be admitted at ports of entry in October, down from nearly 270,000 in September, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data released Tuesday.

The border has been one of Biden’s most vulnerable areas as he seeks reelection in 2024. Republicans have blamed his walking back a slew of Trump administration policies as sending a message beyond the borders that it would not deport illegal immigrants.
