MTG vows third attempt to impeach Mayorkas and dares GOP to block it

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has refused to accept defeat following House Republicans‘ failure to take up her second impeachment effort against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and vowed to try a third time.
Greene, flanked by border state Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) during a press conference outside the Capitol on Tuesday, lambasted the eight GOP defectors who just a day earlier tabled her attempt to remove the Biden administration official who she said was to blame for the deaths of two Americans.

“The biggest thing that we want is we want to see action from our conference. We want to see boldness and courage among Republicans to do the right thing for the American people so that no more Americans die from the Biden administration’s open border policy,” Greene said. “Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas must be impeached, and that’s why I will reintroduce my articles of impeachment in a privileged resolution once again on the House floor. And I dare those eight Republicans to shelf them again.”
The second-term Georgia lawmaker introduced the impeachment measure last week after two of her constituents were killed on Nov. 8 when a human smuggler crashed into their vehicle as they were driving through Texas.
Gonzales suggested lawmakers had become “numb to the chaos” of border-related tragedies, often the result of vehicle crashes in border communities as U.S. citizens hired by Mexican cartels to pick up and transport illegal immigrants try to get away from police. Many federal Border Patrol agents have been pulled from the field to transport and process immigrants in custody, leaving the border unwatched in areas.
Tragedies like last week’s crash that claimed the lives of 67-year-old Jose Lerma and his wife, 65-year-old Isabel Lerma, happen weekly, Gonzales said.
“How many more Americans do they want dead before they’re willing to push that button?” Greene said, a reference to the eight Republicans who voted against impeachment.
Lawmakers who voted against impeachment Monday included Cliff Bentz (R-OR), Ken Buck (R-CO), John Duarte (R-CA), Virginia Foxx (R-NC), Darrell Issa (R-CA), Tom McClintock (R-CA), Patrick McHenry (R-NC), and Michael Turner (R-OH).
Greene first introduced tried to impeach Mayorkas in May, but Republicans were not fully on board and sent the measure to the House Judiciary Committee for consideration. The committee has not advanced her measure in the six months since.
“I am particularly outraged at four of the eight Republicans that voted to shelve these articles of impeachment, voted to kill them, because four of them serve on the Judiciary Committee,” said Greene.
The House on Monday evening sent her second impeachment attempt to the House Homeland Security Committee, which has buried itself in a six-part investigation into Mayorkas that began earlier this summer and is only two-thirds of the way through as of mid-November.
“We don’t need more hearings. We don’t need more strongly worded letters. We don’t need more posts and social media posts because we don’t need any more of that. Americans are fed up with it. We need impeachment,” said Greene. “That is the tool that our founders gave us in the Constitution.”
More than 6 million immigrants have been arrested at the southern border crossing illegally since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. The figure is higher than arrests during the Obama administration’s two terms.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said Mayorkas remains “laser-focused” on carrying out his job.
“Every day, the men and women of the Department of Homeland Security work tirelessly to keep America safe. They need Congress to stop wasting time and do its job by funding the government, reforming our broken immigration system, reauthorizing vital tools for DHS, and passing the Administration’s supplemental request to properly resource the Department’s critical work to stop fentanyl and further secure our borders,” said the DHS spokesperson. “Secretary Mayorkas continues to be laser-focused on the safety and security of our nation. This baseless attack is completely without merit and a harmful distraction from our critical national security priorities.”
