Nancy Mace calls Kevin McCarthy a ‘disgraced former speaker’ in heated interview – Washington Examiner

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) and Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo got into a heated debate Thursday over former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and the current state of the Republican Party.

Mace was asked if she had any interest in supporting the motion to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson, to which she said no. Mace added that Johnson had been dealt a bad hand when becoming speaker, as the “disgraced former speaker” McCarthy had set up “a lot of bad deals” before being vacated.

The comment made against McCarthy then led to a disagreement between Mace and Bartiromo over whether or not McCarthy was disgraced.

“Because he wouldn’t tell the truth to the party, to the conference,” Mace argued on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria. “He lied over and over again, he had a lot of bad deals between the debt ceiling bill of last year.”

Mace also accused McCarthy of recruiting “a puppet” to run against her in the June 11 Republican primary election for her 1st Congressional District seat. She added that her opponent would not be able to win in her district, reiterating her comment that this is one of the reasons McCarthy is disgraced.

The South Carolina congresswoman was one of eight Republicans who voted to vacate McCarthy from his position as House speaker. McCarthy later left Congress at the end of last year.

Bartiromo fired back at Mace, asking when she and her fellow Republicans would unite to accomplish their goals, as the party is currently dealing with an incredibly thin majority in the House of Representatives. Mace countered that McCarthy should not be targeting Republicans who can win in general elections, prompting Bartiromo to state that Mace is still blaming McCarthy even though he has left Congress before ending the interview shortly after.

Since leaving Congress, McCarthy has spoken unfavorably of Mace, stating in February that he does not believe she could win reelection. He also accused Mace of having no principles and of not representing her district.

It is also not the first time Mace has spoken against the former House speaker, calling McCarthy a “loser” but admitting that she did need help in defeating her primary opponent, Catherine Templeton, whom she said was a “puppet in Kevin McCarthy’s bitter revenge operation.”
