Nancy Pelosi nominates DC chef José Andrés and World Central Kitchen for Nobel Peace Prize

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi nominated Washington-based chef José Andrés and the World Central Kitchen, the non-governmental organization he founded, for a Nobel Peace Prize on Wednesday, claiming that both are “heroes for humanity.”

Pelosi, along with Reps. Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) highlighted the impact of Andrés’s NGO, which has served more than 350 million meals worldwide, and urged the Norwegian Nobel Committee to present him with the award.

“During many dark and difficult times, the impact of Chef Andrés and the World Central Kitchen has been extraordinary,” Pelosi wrote in the letter. “All are in awe of how, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Chef Andrés quickly marshaled the effort to provide 40 million meals to feed the hungry across the world.”

The trio mentioned the meal the WCK prepared for members of the National Guard in the wake of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot and its devotion to providing food for people in Ukraine and Gaza. During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the group set up a shop in Kyiv and handed out groceries and hot food to those affected.

Andrés owns multiple restaurants in D.C. and frequently appeared on television with celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain. Andres launched the WCK in 2010, after a major earthquake hit Haiti, to use food as a “force for good.”

The nomination comes just days after Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) nominated former President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his foreign policy efforts in the Middle East.
