NEW: Democrat Steny Hoyer to Announce Retirement From the House After Decades in Congress

Maryland Democrat Rep. Steny Hoyer, 86, is going to announce his retirement from the House after decades in Congress as early as Thursday.

Steny Hoyer was first elected to Congress in 1981.

House Democrats are promoting the younger (and more radical) members to leadership positions.

Politico reported:

Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer is set to announce his retirement from the House as soon as Thursday, capping off a decades-long career in Congress, according to two people who were granted anonymity to confirm the news ahead of a public announcement.

Hoyer, who represents a district stretching from the eastern Washington suburbs to southern Maryland, has served since 1981, rising up through the ranks to become the second-ranking House Democrat under Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

He stepped aside from his senior role after Democrats lost the House in 2022 as part of a broader changing of the guard but remained in Congress, retaking a senior post on the House Appropriations Committee.

Only two sitting House members — GOP Reps. Hal Rogers of Kentucky and Chris Smith of New Jersey — have served longer than Hoyer, and only by a few months.

Recall that Steny Hoyer stepped down from his leadership role as House Majority Leader after the Republicans took control of the House of Representatives during the 2022 midterms.

Hoyer said he’s proud of the role he played in destroying the country.

“I am proud of the role I have played over the last four decades to make our country a more perfect & inclusive union & ensure that our workers & families can #MakeItInAmerica. I am profoundly grateful to my constituents and to my colleagues for giving me this opportunity.” he said back in November 2022.

Former Speaker Pelosi, 85, also announced she was retiring from leadership after the 2022 midterms.

“Now we must move boldly into the future,” Pelosi said. “The hour has come for a new generation,” Pelosi said.

Last year Pelosi announced she would not be seeking reelection.
