New Hampshire Democrats launch write-in campaign for Biden

Despite not filing to appear on the ballot, Democrats in New Hampshire are looking to secure a primary victory for President Joe Biden in the state next year.

The initiative comes less than a week after Biden’s campaign confirmed it would forgo filing to appear on the ballot in the Granite State for the Democratic primary, citing guidance from the DNC. The campaign to encourage voters to write in Biden for the Democratic primary, titled Write In Biden, is not affiliated with the Biden campaign but has the backing of various prominent state Democrats.

“While misguided DNC rules will leave Joe Biden off the primary ballot here in 2024, New Hampshire Democrats and Democrat-leaning Independents overwhelmingly support Joe Biden and plan to write him in,” the website said. “Supporting our democracy is much more important than party politics or misguided DNC rules. This is about doing what’s right for our country.”

“We in New Hampshire have said all along that whatever the DNC does, NH will follow its law and have the first presidential primary. Well, we’re having the first in the nation primary — and now it’s up to us to show the nation and world that Joe Biden is the president we need to protect our freedom,” the website continues.

The campaign has the support of every Democratic state senator, along with Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig and state Executive Councilor Cinde Warmington, who are both running for governor in 2024.

Among the listed members of the grassroots committee, none of the two U.S. senators or representatives from the Granite State appear, but Rep. Annie Kuster (D-NH) expressed her support in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Monday.

“Joe Biden is the leader our country needs to continue moving America forward. I’m proud to support the grassroots effort to Write-In Biden in New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary this winter,” Kuster posted.

Biden’s decision to follow DNC guidance and not appear on the New Hampshire primary ballot sparked backlash from several state officials, including state Secretary of State David Scanlan, who claimed the president was shunning the state.

While Biden will not be on the ballot for the Democratic primary in January, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), who announced his presidential bid last week, made it a point to appear on the New Hampshire ballot by filing for the Democratic primary in the state shortly after announcing his run.
