(The Center Square) – New Mexico is one of the more popular states for inbound moves, according to the 2023 United Van Lines National Moves Study. New Mexico ranks ninth among the most popular states for inbound moves, according to the report.

People are coming to the state for jobs, retirement, a better lifestyle, and a reduced cost of living, according to the governor’s office. Additionally, about one-third of moves were from people who wanted to be closer to family.

“Individuals, families, and businesses around the country are recognizing the potential New Mexico offers, especially with regards to jobs, lifestyle, and retirement,” Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said. “We’re continuing to build up systems that attract and support continued growth and a thriving population. Welcome to New Mexico!”

The increased inbound moves to New Mexico come as the state has cut taxes. It eliminated income tax on social security for most recipients in 2022 and cut its Gross Receipts Tax for the first time in 40 years.

“Those efforts, as well as tuition-free college, expanded early childhood education, strong job growth, quality outdoor recreation, and cultural amenities, are solidifying New Mexico’s position as a place where families can succeed,” a press release said.

Nearly 60% of moves involving the state are inbound, while about 40% are outbound; this comes after the state was closer to 50% and 50%, respectively, between 2015 and 2021.

The inbound moves may be having only a small effect as census data released last month shows New Mexico’s population increased by only about 900 people between July 2022 and July 2023.

New Mexico was the only southwestern state in the top 10 for inbound moves.
