New Orleans residents are speaking out against a Halloween decoration set up at a resident’s house, which portrays a giant Satan holding a beheaded Jesus.

The display, set up by Bucktown resident Vic Miorana, also features three crucifixes in front of a backdrop of a church, with a priest and a nun accompanying the body of Jesus. A mother was first alerted about the display by her children, which she called “appalling,” and another woman described it as “blasphemy.”

“I understand everybody has freedom of speech,” resident Paula Hennessey said. “That’s what we are all here for. That’s what makes this country great, but we have freedom of speech as well. I felt like we needed to express our opinion as well.”

Rachel Flanagan, one of the women speaking out against the decoration, said that she is “all about Halloween” and decorates for the holiday but that Miorana’s display is “crossing the line.”

Miorana has dismissed the harsh criticism he has received over the decorations, saying he “wanted to make people scared” and “a little uncomfortable.” He also said he has no bias against the church and claims he was raised Catholic.

“If this isn’t your particular cup of tea, maybe pick a different street to walk down on Halloween,” Miorana said.

Code enforcement visited Miorana’s property on Monday, saying that it did not find “any local ordinances” were violated over his decorations, though it noted that his display is “clearly offensive” and not family-friendly.

A neighbor of Miorana, Frank Turan, said he did not see anything wrong with the decorations and that “everyone seems to like it, except a few people.” He also stated that Miorana “goes way overboard” with his Halloween decorations every year.
