New York deli to sell ‘the NYPD’ sandwich to raise funds for Jonathan Diller’s family – Washington Examiner

A deli in New York has unveiled a new sandwich to honor slain New York Police Department officer Jonathan Diller, with a portion of the proceeds being given to Diller’s family.

The new sandwich from Mario’s Meat Market and Gourmet Deli, located in the borough of Queens, has been named “The NYPD” and consists of chicken, prosciutto, mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, and arugula drizzled with balsamic glaze. Beyond naming a sandwich to honor Diller, the deli will also donate $5 to his family for every sale of “The NYPD” the deli makes.

“Officer Diller’s murder gave me the chills,” deli owner Joe DiGangi said. “It hit me. I have two young boys. I couldn’t imagine not being at their hockey game.”

Diller, 31, was killed during a traffic stop in Queens when he and another NYPD officer approached a car that was parked illegally at a bus stop. Two men were in the vehicle at the time, but one of them got out of the car with a gun and shot Diller, prompting the other officer to fire back.

The new sandwich from DiGangi’s deli received the praise of New York City Councilman Robert Holden, a Democrat, who said the deli owner “cares about the neighborhood” and the sacrifices that the families of police officers make.

The donations made by Mario’s Meat Market and Gourmet Deli are not the only ones the Diller family is receiving, as Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy helped raise over $1.5 million for his family through a T-shirt sale to honor the service and life of the slain officer.

Diller had worked for the NYPD for three years, during which he received recognition for “excellent police duty” three times by the department.
