Newsom defends Biden’s economy ahead of South Carolina primary: ‘He delivered’

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) sang President Joe Biden‘s praises Sunday, claiming “Republicans dreamt” of the economic success he’s seen.

“The economy is booming, inflation is cooling,” he told ABC News’s Jonathan Karl. “The economic strategies this president’s put together were all things Republicans dreamt of but never delivered. He delivered.”

When Karl prompted him on why the president’s approval rating is “historically low” despite these accomplishments, Newsom downplayed it. “Everybody’s approval” is down, he claimed. “Across the spectrum.”

According to data from Pew Research Center, positive opinions of the economy are increasing. The rise in positive views of the economy is primarily driven by Democrats, 44% of whom believe economic conditions in the U.S. are “excellent or good.” But the change is also due to increasing positive views of the economy from independents, as 28% agreed with Democrats that the economy is booming.

At the same time, Biden’s approval rating hasn’t seen any improvement as views of the economy become more positive. Pew revealed the president’s approval sat at 33%, unchanged from the historic low of last month.

Newsom brought his praise for Biden to South Carolina last week, where the high-profile surrogate spoke to voters in Beaufort County. The California Democrat’s visit comes a week ahead of South Carolina’s debut as the new first-in-the-nation Democratic primary on Feb. 3.

The Democratic primary in South Carolina is expected to set the tone for Biden going into the general election and provide a snapshot of his popularity among various demographics and whether his campaign has been successful at fostering enthusiasm.
