Newsom plots 2028 course with plan to use California as Trump nemesis – Washington Examiner

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and other California officials are bracing themselves and their state for a second Trump term.

Knowing the state’s liberal policies would be a target for the former president, Newsom is “Trump-proofing” his state, according to Politico, to which the Trump campaign confirmed California’s electric vehicle policy would be a target of his presidency.

“We know the playbook,” Newsom said at the recent signing of a climate change agreement with Sweden. “We’re definitely trying to future-proof California in every way, shape, or form.”

In 2019, then-President Donald Trump revoked a California Clean Air Act waiver that allowed the state to set its own tailpipe emissions standards. Some automakers sided with Trump, but California made deals with BMW, Ford, Honda, Volkswagen, and Volvo to adhere to California’s standards, which are stricter than federally required.

Last week, California made a deal with Stellantis, the fourth-largest automaker in the world, which includes brands such as Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge, on the basis of the 2019 deal.

“Together, we have found a win-win solution that is good for the customer and good for the planet,” Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said in a statement.

“It’s significant and cannot be under[stated], the importance of their voluntary compliance,” Newsom said. “This agreement is a big deal in accelerating and advancing our efforts.”

Still, the Trump campaign is eyeing California’s push toward electric vehicles as a policy it can go after.

“The complete and total ban on gas-powered cars and trucks in California and every other state that follows the California rules will decimate countless U.S. auto jobs,” Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

Trump said a second Biden term would lead to a “bloodbath” in the automobile industry.

“Donald Trump is a danger to our kids’ health,” said Lindsey Cobia, a political adviser to Newsom. “He seeks to invalidate our clean air laws and auction off public lands to the oil industry. He wants to be once again Big Oil’s president.”

In Trump’s first term, the Environmental Protection Agency and Interior Department frequently battled with California over similar policies. In addition to revoking the Clean Air Act waiver, they altered the Endangered Species Act in an attempt to increase water delivery. The previous administration also opened up hundreds of miles of California coastline to oil drilling.
