Nikki Haley hits Trump over cognitive health after E. Jean Carroll confusion

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley slammed former President Donald Trump again over his mental capabilities as the two fiercely battle over the GOP presidential nomination.

Early Friday morning, Trump released a campaign video where he inexplicably linked Haley’s presidential campaign to his defamation trial with the writer E. Jean Carroll.

“I don’t even know who this woman is. I have no idea who she is, or where she came from. This is another scam. It’s a political witch hunt,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social in a reference to the defamation case before he appeared to allude to Haley’s campaign. “You have somebody running for office. You have a woman that’s financed and lied about it. She totally lied about it.”

Haley struck back against the accusations on X.

“Wait a second, did Trump just say the person suing him is ‘running for office?’ Is he confused again?” she mocked Trump before referencing a previous moment when Trump appeared to confuse her with Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

“I was not in a New York City courtroom yesterday, any more than I was in charge of security at the Capitol on January 6,” Haley continued. “I was in South Carolina meeting with voters. They’d like to see a debate between me and Trump.”

In the run-up to Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary, Haley criticized Trump’s cognitive abilities after the Pelosi mix-up at a campaign event. “I’m not saying anything derogatory, but when you’re dealing with the pressures of a presidency, we can’t have someone else that we question whether they’re mentally fit to do this,” Haley said last week.

“We see that Biden has changed so much over two years,” Haley said. “But last night, Trump is at a rally and he’s going on and on mentioning me multiple times as to why I didn’t take security during the Capitol riot, why I didn’t handle Jan. 6 better.”

The former South Carolina governor has never been a member of Congress and therefore was not at the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot.

Haley’s refusal to exit the race after losing both the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary to the former president has infuriated Trump. But Haley appears to relish challenging Trump and the GOP leaders who have rallied around him as the eventual nominee.

Trump has also resisted Haley’s calls to debate him one-on-one, keeping in style with his rejection of the five previous primary debates this election cycle.

After losing to Trump by 11 percentage points in the Granite State, Haley pivoted to holding rallies in South Carolina, bypassing the next early state of Nevada. But the path to the nomination remains unclear as the GOP falls in line behind Trump.
