North Carolina Democrats tout Kamala Harris visit as proof state is ‘in play’ in 2024

The North Carolina Democratic Party is using a Thursday visit from Vice President Kamala Harris to prove that the southern state will be competitive in the 2024 election.

Harris’s team confirmed the visit to Charlotte, North Carolina, on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

The vice president will be joined by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona on a trip to Eastway Middle School, where they plan on meeting with teachers, counselors, and parents. During the trip they will be announcing additional funding for the Safer Communities Act, which seeks to increase access for students to mental health resources.

“This visit by the VP shows that North Carolina is in play and will be a top battleground state of 2024,” the state’s Democratic Party shared on X.

“We are excited the Biden campaign is investing in North Carolina as Republicans always encourage Democrats to light money on fire in places where voters have solidly rejected them cycle after cycle,” Republican National Committee spokeswoman Emma Vaughn told the Washington Examiner.

In response to the post, the North Carolina Republican Party reshared a post from a Republican Party communications director, which read, “Dems are going to lose North Carolina again and should just come to terms with it now rather than later.”

North Carolina has a history of voting for Republican presidential candidates consistently since 1968, with two exceptions — former President Jimmy Carter in 1976 and former President Barack Obama in 2008.

The state swung against Obama and then-Vice President Joe Biden in 2012 and voted for former President Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020.
