NRCC breaks fundraising record heading into 2024 presidential cycle

The National Republican Congressional Committee raised more than $91 million in 2023, a record-high sum for the committee heading into a presidential year, the group announced on Tuesday.

The NRCC raised $7.15 million in December, finishing out the year with a fundraising total of $91.3 million. That leaves the group with $42.5 million cash on hand heading into the 2024 cycle as the group seeks to expand its slim majority in the House and defend a number of vulnerable districts.

The latest report signals momentum for the House GOP after a fundraising slump in October amid Republicans’ speakership vacancy, during which the party grew concerned the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) would negatively affect their fundraising ability. However, the NRCC has managed to rake in millions of dollars since Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) assumed the speaker’s gavel.

“Republicans hold the momentum to grow our House majority with historic fundraising and an incredible class of candidates, allowing us to expand the map and put Democrats on defense,” NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson said in a statement. “With the border crisis, crime surge and the cost of living giving voters every reason to reject extreme House Democrats, Hakeem Jeffries should prepare himself for another long slog in the minority.”

On the same day the group announced its record-high total, a pair of House Republican leaders announced massive contributions to the NRCC to help bolster its war chest heading into the 2024 cycle. Johnson told Republican lawmakers he would transfer an additional $2 million to the committee during a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, according to a source familiar. That brings Johnson’s total contributions to the NRCC to $5 million since being elected speaker.

GOP Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) also announced a transfer of $1 million to the NRCC during the party meeting on Tuesday, a source confirmed to the Washington Examiner.

The latest report comes after the NRCC raised $9 million in November, marking the group’s largest haul it has ever recorded in an off-year November and nearly doubling its gains from the month before.

It’s unclear how inflation has affected fundraising numbers. However, the NRCC’s record haul comes after the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee boasted a fundraising haul of $108.9 million during the first 11 months of 2023, roughly $17.6 million more than the NRCC total from the entire year.

The DCCC, which is eyeing a path to reclaiming the House majority in November, has not yet released its total numbers for 2023, and a spokesperson pointed to its previous report in November to show its fundraising prowess.

The group ended November with $48.8 million cash on hand, surpassing the current war chest the NRCC reported heading into the new year. It’s not yet clear how much money the DCCC has on hand heading into 2024, but the group is expected to release those numbers later this week.
