Former President Barack Obama has quickly become the most influential surrogate for President Joe Biden’s 2024 campaign, with a contest for donors to meet the two men bringing in more than $2 million.

The fundraiser offering donors a chance to meet Obama and Biden pulled in a reported $2.6 million, more than any other such contest. The former president’s ability to garner that level of enthusiasm and translate it into material resources for the campaign has made Obama a boon for the campaign.

He is also front and center in a new video for the campaign, highlighting his growing role in ensuring his former running mate’s reelection.

“Our democracy depends on you,” Obama told possible donors in the fundraising ad, echoing the Biden campaign’s focus on democracy and former President Donald Trump’s threat to it.

“It really does, folks, that’s no joke,” Biden said. “That’s why we need you.”

The former president added, “We need your help to ensure Joe’s leadership continues to guide us forward.”

Obama claimed, “The other side won’t rest. So we can’t, either,” stressing the necessity of donations to give Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris enough resources to win.

The campaign indicated to NBC News that it would either meet or exceed its goal of $70 million between combined campaign committees when the results of its 2023 final quarter fundraising haul were in. Biden’s team has yet to release these numbers.

While Obama has played an expanding role in Biden’s fundraising operation, he hasn’t joined him for events with voters on the campaign trail going into 2024.
