Obama’s London visit sparks questions about motive and whether Biden is involved – Washington Examiner

Former President Barack Obama made a surprise trip to London on Monday, less than a day after a report surfaced claiming President Joe Biden frequently measures himself against his former boss.

The former president was spotted visiting United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at his official residence at 10 Downing St. The visit to the residence was his first since a 2016 trip at the end of his presidency, when David Cameron was prime minister.

The “informal courtesy drop-in” lasted about an hour, during which Obama and Sunak discussed various topics. The visit was of his own volition and ostensibly unrelated to Biden.

The absence of Biden, or perhaps his influence, stoked rumors that Obama made the trip as part of his own interest in power.

Obama’s visit came in the immediate wake of an Axios report that detailed a “rivalry” between staffers of the Obama and Biden administrations and the two men themselves. According to the report, the rivalry is felt especially by Biden, who feels lasting bitterness over several differences between the two policywise and Obama’s preference of Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee in 2016 over him. He also frequently compares his accomplishments as president to Obama’s.

A Washington Post report previously said that Biden speaks with former President Bill Clinton more than Obama.

White House spokesman Andrew Bates denied the Axios report, saying Obama “is family to him.”
