Officials Sound Alarm Over Tropical Storm Surge As Hurricane Erin Approaches American Coast

A situation that’s being considered dangerous and possibly life-threatening is anticipated to take place throughout parts of the East Coast following a Tropical Storm Warning and Storm Surge Warning being issued for the Outer Banks in North Carolina as Hurricane Erin spins towards the United States.

It’s not expected that Hurricane Erin will make landfall in the U.S., however, concern is growing amongst forecasters that Erin’s outer bands will clip the coast of North Carolina as the storm grows stronger. As Erin passes by, the Outer Banks will experience tropical-storm-force winds, heavy rain and severe flooding. (RELATED: Mandatory Evacuation Ordered In North Carolina Due To Hurricane Erin)

Hurricane Erin is also expected to create gargantuan waves (15-20 feet) that will clobber the North Carolina coast, which will cause rip currents to be deadly for people going into the ocean.

From Beaufort Inlet to Duck, North Carolina, a Tropical Storm Warning has been issued by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), while a Tropical Storm Watch has been put into place from the north of Duck to Cape Charles Light, Virginia.

From Cape Lookout to Duck, a Storm Surge Warning has been issued.

Due to the dangerous conditions, officials in a number of communities in North Carolina are telling both their residents and visitors to leave in a mandatory evacuation. Local states of emergency have also been declared prior to Hurricane Erin making its impact.

“The State Emergency Response Team is poised and ready to respond to any needs from our local communities this week,” said North Carolina Emergency Management Director Will Ray in an official statement.

“As forecasted impacts become clearer, we will plan for the pre-positioning of any necessary resources for rapid deployment along our coast. In the meantime, all visitors and residents along the coast should follow the instructions of local emergency management officials to keep you and your family safe.”
