Oklahoma House passes resolution to bolster Second Amendment protections – Washington Examiner

The Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a resolution to bolster Second Amendment protections in the Sooner State.

HJR 1034 was engrossed, signed, and sent to the state Senate Thursday, and if passed into law, would permit Oklahomans to vote on an amendment to the state constitution.

“HJR 1034 would refer to a vote of the people a proposed amendment to Article II, Section 26 of the Oklahoma Constitution,” a bill summary said. “The proposed amendment would allow the legislature to enforce or adopt narrowly tailored time, place, and manner regulations, or authorize political subdivisions to adopt and enforce such regulations, to serve a compelling state interest.”

“The amendment would prohibit any law from imposing registration or special taxation upon the keeping of arms including the acquisition, ownership, possession, or transfer of arms, ammunition, or the components of arms or ammunition.”

Handguns, rifles, shotguns, knives, nonlethal defensive weapons, and ammunition are among the items protected by the resolution, which serves to expand the “rights of citizens to keep and bear arms,” according to bill information.

“The Second Amendment is the pillar upon which all the other amendments rest,” Oklahoma Republican House Speaker Charles McCall, the author of the resolution, said.

“It is built into the bedrock of our nation and state, and House Joint Resolution 1034 further strengthens the already firm commitment that Oklahoma has to protecting and defending our God-given Second Amendment rights.”
