Pelosi ally joins in calling on Biden to step aside – Washington Examiner

Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), a close ally of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), sent a letter to President Joe Biden on Friday asking him to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.

Lofgren said she, as a member of the House Select Committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attacks on the Capitol, knows “perhaps as well as anyone, how unsuitable Donald Trump is to be President.”

“Simply put, your candidacy is on a trajectory to lose the White House and potentially impact crucial House and Senate races down ballot,” Lofgren said. “It is for these reasons that I urge you to step aside from our Party’s nomination to allow another Democratic candidate to compete against and beat Donald Trump in the November election.”

Her statement comes after reports that battleground House candidates confided in Pelosi about their concerns over how their races would fare with Biden at the top of the ticket.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has dismissed claims that Biden as the Democratic nominee will affect down-ballot races, arguing the party needs to “clearly communicate their agenda” to people instead.

Lofgren is the 30th congressional Democrat to call on Biden to suspend his reelection campaign and the eighth to do so Friday. She was joined by Reps. Sean Casten (D-IL), Jared Huffman (D-CA), Marc Veasey (D-TX), Chuy Garcia (D-IL), Mark Pocan (D-WI), and Greg Landsman (D-OH) in asking Biden to step aside and pass the torch to a new nominee.
