Pelosi dodges question about age and mental acuity in 2024 campaigns

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) refused to answer questions about the impact of President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump‘s ages on their ability to hold office.

Pelosi appeared on State of the Union on Sunday, where host Dana Bash asked her if she thought “age and mental acuity are fair lines of attack” for Trump or Biden. The former speaker of the House is 83 herself, while Biden is 81 and Trump is 77, but all three have engaged in attacks on each other centered on their age.

Instead of answering the question, Pelosi avoided the topic by countering a recent allegation Trump made about her on January 6, 2021. The two have contested which of them was unwilling to send National Guardsmen amid the riots that day, and Pelosi claimed it was then-President Trump who refused to send them.

“But on the cognitive question — because this is a line of attack now from President Biden who will likely be his opponent. Is that fair?” Bash questioned a second time. “Is mental acuity — cognitive ability — is that where this conversation should be happening right now between these two candidates?”

“Well, I think that there’s something to be said for as we review the campaign, let’s see what he has to say about things,” Pelosi said before launching into a defense of the Affordable Care Act. “Let me say this. We don’t agonize about him. We organize.”

Biden is currently the oldest sitting president at 81. If he should be reelected, he would be 86 at the end of his second term.

The president attacked Trump for seemingly confusing Pelosi for Nikki Haley during a rally earlier this month. Trump blamed Haley for the lack of troops on Jan. 6.
