Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said she received a “horrifying” response from the military on Jan. 6 when she called for backup.

Pelosi was the head of the House when pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol, and she went on to play a central role in the events that followed. The California Democrat published an op-ed in the Atlantic ahead of the third anniversary of the event, recounting the response she received when asking for military support.

“I contacted Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy, who could not have been more casual. In response to our pleas to dispatch reinforcements, he said: ‘Well, I have to report to my boss. That takes time. I don’t know what we can do.’ His answer was horrifying,” Pelosi wrote.

The former House speaker bemoaned how the Pentagon “dragged its feet” but praised the work of the governors of Virginia and Maryland, who dispatched law enforcement and National Guard troops.

Pelosi criticized acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller, whom she, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called for further reinforcements.

“Mitch [McConnell] insisted that the National Guard ‘get there in one hell of a hurry, you understand?’ I demanded an answer: ‘Just pretend for a moment it was the Pentagon or the White House or some other entity that was under siege.’ Still, Miller delayed,” she wrote.

Elsewhere in the piece, Pelosi called Trump’s request for Vice President Mike Pence not to certify the election results “diabolical” and condemned those who voted against certifying the results.
