Pelosi says House Republicans ‘don’t believe in governance’

October 25, 2023 01:23 PM

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has argued that House Republicans do not believe in “governance” as the House continues its search for a speaker.

The search for the new speaker comes after the House voted on Oct. 3 to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the position, with eight Republican lawmakers joining the Democrats in voting to remove him. Since then, production in the House has stalled, as Congress is limited in what it can do until it finds a new speaker.

“They don’t believe in governance,” Pelosi told MSNBC. “Understand that. So this, for them, is not any break in the action. They don’t want any actions. This is it.”

Despite her grievances with House Republicans, Pelosi also encouraged members of her opposing party to “take back” their party, specifically the party that has made “such a contribution to our country.”

“Again, who am I to be advocating for a strong Republican Party, but it is what our country needs in addition to a strong Democratic Party, whatever party that people put out there,” Pelosi said.

House Republicans have recently selected speaker-designate Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA), with the entire House holding a vote for him on Wednesday. This will be the House’s fourth vote on a new speaker after its previous nominee, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), failed to gain the required votes.

Ahead of the vote, former President Donald Trump issued a statement suggesting that House Republicans go with Johnson as the speaker and “GET IT DONE, FAST.” It comes after Trump came out against Rep. Tom Emmer’s (R-MN) bid for the speakership in part because he had voted to certify the results of the 2020 election.
