Perry, Iowa, shooting: Police investigating shooter at high school

Law enforcement is responding to an active shooter situation at Perry High School in Perry, Iowa, with multiple victims reported.

Iowa Department of Public Safety confirmed in a statement on Thursday morning that there was a school shooting at Perry High School.

Dallas County confirmed on its Facebook page that law enforcement officers were at the scene responding to a shooting at the high school.

Shooting victims from Perry High School are being transported to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, a hospital spokesperson told NBC News. The conditions of the victims were not provided.

Thursday was the first day back for Perry Community School District students for the second semester. The high school is made up of about 1,800 students.

Information from a local police scanner indicated that at least five ambulances were en route to the scene. A reunification center has been set up at the McCreary Community Building in Perry, according to a dispatcher.

A news conference will begin at 11 a.m. Eastern time.

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who is set to host a campaign event in Perry on Thursday, responded to the shooting reports in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Pray for the community in Perry, Iowa this morning,” Ramaswamy wrote.
