Despite President Joe Biden‘s efforts to pay homage to transgender Americans on Easter, politicians opted to celebrate the original holiday on social media.
Sunday is the Christian holiday of Easter, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. On Saturday, Biden declared March 31 as Transgender Day of Visibility in a nod to the LGBT community. Political figures sounded off on social media on Sunday in honor of Easter instead.
“He has risen! Let us rejoice!” Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) wrote, along with a reference to 1 Corinthians 6:14. “Happy Easter to all who celebrate.”
“Wishing you and your family a blessed and happy Easter!” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) wrote along with Luke 24:6-7. “Christ is King!”
“I am proud to proclaim this as the day my merciful savior conquered death itself and brought eternal life,” Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) wrote.

Even Biden offered his own nod to the holiday.
“Jill and I send our warmest wishes to Christians around the world celebrating Easter Sunday. Easter reminds us of the power of hope and the promise of Christ’s Resurrection,” Biden wrote in a statement. “As we gather with loved ones, we remember Jesus’ sacrifice. We pray for one another and cherish the blessing of the dawn of new possibilities. And with wars and conflict taking a toll on innocent lives around the world, we renew our commitment to work for peace, security, and dignity for all people.

Meanwhile, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reiterated the administration’s desire to “[honor] the extraordinary courage and contributions of transgender Americans and reaffirms our Nation’s commitment to forming a more perfect union where all people are treated equally.”
Sunday is also known as Cesar Chavez Day, as it is the birthday of the late founder of the United Farm Workers Union. Then-President Barack Obama declared his birthday a holiday in 2014.
