Pro-Palestinian protesters descend on New York City transportation hubs

December 18, 2023 08:40 PM

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators targeted New York City’s major transportation hubs in the latest of several major protests that have gone through the city.

Grand Central Terminal, Port Authority Bus Terminal, and Penn Station were all targeted by the deluge of protesters, according to Fox 5. The crowds carried Palestinian flags, banners, and signs, and they chanted through bullhorns. Within Our Lifetime, a pro-Palestinian advocacy organization, advertised the protest in advance, with the timeline of the protest largely reflecting the plan.

An Instagram post from the group, calling for a “PROTEST & GLOBAL STRIKE FOR GAZA & ALL OF PALESTINE!” on Dec. 18, detailed that the protest was scheduled to march at Grand Central Terminal at 3 p.m., Port Authority Bus Terminal at 4 p.m., and Penn Station at 5 p.m.

The march appeared to have remained largely peaceful.

The New York Post reported that police attempted to block off Penn Station, but protesters were able to circumvent them.

Despite the general nonviolence of the protest, there were still several heated moments, particularly when actor Alec Baldwin interacted with a group of demonstrators. Police had to escort Baldwin away after a heated argument escalated into a near-physical confrontation. As he was being led away, a protester mentioned his accidental shooting of a cinematographer on the set of Rust.

Videos of the demonstration showed an array of flags, with one protester waving the flag of Vatican City.

Videos of the protest showed protesters calling for an intifada, referring to two periods of unrest in the West Bank in which Palestinians clashed with Israeli authorities, on numerous occasions carrying out suicide bombings.

Pro-Palestinian protesters have targeted ostensibly unrelated locations and events over the war in Gaza on several occasions, a strategy that has divided public opinion but succeeded in drawing attention to the conflict.
