Progressive Democrats issue warning to Biden as he pushes for key deal with GOP

President Joe Biden is facing a possible mutiny among progressive Democrats in Congress, who are threatening him over a major border deal.

Tensions between progressive Democrats and Biden, along with his more centrist Democratic allies in Congress, escalated dramatically in October when the party split over stances on the Israel-Hamas war. Tensions are poised to worsen as Biden seeks a compromise with House Republicans to stem the border crisis. Progressive Democrats are warning that any compromise will be met with staunch resistance.

“The president would just do very well to remember it has never worked for Democrats to just take up Republican talking points and think that somehow Republicans are going to turn around and thank us for it,” Progressive Caucus Chairwoman Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) told Politico. “That’s just not going to happen.”

Other progressive Democratic House members backed up her claims.

“It’s bad immigration policy. It’s bad for our economy. It’s not humane. It’s bad for Americans, and then I think it’s bad politics as well. I don’t think that we should be accepting a hostage-taking situation and Trump-light policies as Democrats,” Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX) said.

“I’m a NO on any deal that includes failed, anti-immigrant policies,” he added in a post on X.

Casar was one of the most prominent Democrats to call for Biden to federalize the Texas National Guard in response to the border dispute with Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX).

The border deal also faces opposition from conservative Republicans, with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) voicing skepticism. Revolts from both flanks could spell the end of the border deal, the text of which is expected to be released this week.
