Raffensperger calls on Georgia General Assembly to strengthen protections preventing noncitizens from voting

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is calling on the Georgia legislature to strengthen election integrity measures from litigation by passing a constitutional amendment enshrining that only citizens may vote in elections in the Peach State.

Raffensperger touted the state’s current voting laws as being strong but expressed concern over lawsuits that could undermine the laws in place. He stressed the importance of getting a state constitutional amendment to protect the measure as illegal immigrants continue to enter the country through the southern border.

“With open borders, citizenship verification for voter registration is more important than ever,” Raffensperger said. “Organizations like the Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda are currently suing to end critical citizenship verification in our registration process, potentially exposing our elections to foreign interference, and diluting the power of legally registered voters.”

“I’m calling on the General Assembly to take immediate action and pass a constitutional amendment ensuring that no liberal group can leverage the courts to add noncitizens to our voter rolls,” he continued.

The state’s voting laws, particularly Senate Bill 202, have been targeted by various liberal groups seeking to strike various provisions, including voter identification. Raffensperger said that the Georgia system “works” and railed against the liberal groups for trying to strip the laws.

“Our system works,” Raffensperger said in a statement. ”Failed candidates like Stacey Abrams, and the organization she founded, Fair Fight, have fought in court to eliminate citizenship verification for Georgia voters and they continue to fail in court.”

Several other states have passed state constitutional amendments clarifying that only U.S. citizens may vote in elections in their states, including in neighboring Florida in 2020.

Some cities, including Washington, D.C., have passed laws allowing noncitizens to vote in local city elections. The laws do not permit these people to vote in federal elections.
