Rashida Tliab blasted by Michigan attorney general for ‘cruel’ remark

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) was blasted by Michigan‘s attorney general over remarks she made about a controversial pro-Palestinian chant.

On Friday, Tlaib defended the popular pro-Palestinian chant — “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” saying that it was “an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence.” Many Jewish groups view the phrase as a call for genocide, and Tlaib faced prompt denouncements from many, including allies. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel (D) became the latest to denounce the Palestinian-American congresswoman, asking her to retract her statement.

“I have supported and defended you countless times, even when you have said the indefensible, because I believed you to be a good person whose heart was in the right place. But this is so hurtful to so many. Please retract this cruel and hateful remark,” Nessel said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday.

Tlaib ignited another firestorm of controversy around the Israel-Palestine issue when she defended the controversial slogan, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”

“From the river to the sea is an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate,” Tlaib wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “My work and advocacy is always centered in justice and dignity for all people no matter faith or ethnicity.”

Analysts are divided as to the exact origins and meaning behind the phrase, with many Jewish and Zionist figures claiming that it is a genocidal threat. Pro-Palestinian figures insist that it is a simple call for liberty and justice.
