Ovidio Guzmán, a son of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, pleaded not guilty to a litany of drug-related charges in a Chicago court on Monday, VICE reported.
Guzmán was charged with drug trafficking, money laundering, arms trafficking, VICE News reported.
Guzmán was extradited from Mexico, VICE News reported. Ovidio was captured following a gunfight between the Sinaloa drug cartel and the government back in January. (RELATED: Video Shows El Chapo’s Wife Partying After Release From Prison)
The swift move by the United States to seek and get extradition was likely motivated by how the elder Guzmán managed to escape three times from a Mexican prison, the outlet reported.
“Guzmán’s extraction was kept secret, even from the director of the Mexican prison, and was set to happen on September 15 during the Mexican independence celebrations to avoid any retaliation from his people,” a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent told VICE.
The younger Guzmán reportedly told the judge during his hearing that he was suffering from and taking medicine for depression, anxiety and a recent stomach operation, according to VICE.

El Chapo was sentenced to life plus 30 years in prison for his leading role in the Mexican Sinaloa drug cartel back in 2019, according to a press release by the Department of Justice (DOJ).
“The long road that brought ‘El Chapo’ Guzman Loera to a United States courtroom is lined with drugs, death, and destruction, but ends today with justice,” Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowski said in the DOJ’s press release.
Attorney General Merrick Garland vowed that “the Justice Department will continue to hold accountable those responsible for fueling the opioid epidemic that has devastated too many communities across the country,” the Associated Press reported.
