An elderly woman who allegedly shot her husband to death at a South Carolina nursing home in September left behind a cryptic note, according to WTOC.
Harriet Kay Recker, 82, is accused of fatally shooting her husband, Dennis Recker, 81, on Sept. 12 at Preston Health Center, WTOC reported. A neighbor who had driven Harriet to the health center on the morning of the alleged shooting noticed an extra chair was needed in Dennis’s room.
A staffer left to retrieve a chair and heard a loud noise while away. The neighbor then returned to Dennis’s room and found him with a gunshot wound to the chest and Harriet allegedly holding a revolver. Dennis, who had been admitted to the health center one day earlier for medical issues requiring extra care, reportedly said, “She shot me” when the alleged incident occurred. He died on scene, according to WTOC.
The alleged shooting happened at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 12, Bluffton Today reported. Police deputies received a report of shots fired at the health center and responded to the scene.
During the investigation, deputies allegedly found a note in Harriet’s purse that matched a note later found with financial documents at her home, which suggests the incident may have been premeditated.
“To you all this has just been too much for me, I so wish I could do it with the wonderful family we have, so many good friends. We can’t have a life without someone and that someone can’t be me as I am not strong enough or smart enough to do all this,” a portion of the alleged note read, WTOC reported.
Harriet has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. She is being held without bond at the Beaufort County Jail, according to WTOC. (RELATED: Woman Killed By Flying Solar Panel As US Gets Blasted With Powerful Storm)
Ted Dwemoh, who provided pest control services to the couple, reacted to Harriet’s arrest, saying he was “dumbfounded.”
“When I saw her picture, I was dumbfounded, like there is no way that this woman did what they are saying she did,” Dwemoh said, according to The Independent.
“She would try and help you out with anything. When you went to her house to do pest control, she would walk and talk with you, give you snacks and water. She’s the nicest person in Sun City,” he added.
