Two Utah police officers were killed and a sheriff’s deputy and police dog were wounded Sunday night when a gunman opened fire during a domestic disturbance call, authorities said.
The shooting began after a Tremonton officer responded to the call and was speaking with a resident when a man emerged from the home with a gun and opened fire, killing the officer, Brigham City police said in a statement. A second Tremonton officer who arrived for backup was also fatally shot. (RELATED: Watch Reno Cops Take Down Alleged Casino Gunman In Chaotic Shootout)
A Box Elder County sheriff’s deputy who responded as the attack unfolded was hit when the suspect fired into the deputy’s vehicle, wounding both the deputy and a K-9 inside. Both were evacuated to treatment and are listed in fair condition, according to police.

“We don’t know what we’re walking into. They are one of the most dangerous events we can be dispatched on,” Brigham City Police Chief Chad Reyes said during a press conference Monday, according to ABC News. “These officers have been doing this. They took an oath to protect and serve their communities and that’s what they were doing, and they knew the dangers going into this and unfortunately they paid the ultimate price.”
Bystanders persuaded the suspect to put down his weapon after he shot the officers and police dog, police said in the statement. Additional officers then took him into custody without further incident. SWAT teams cleared the home, and the suspect was booked into the Box Elder County Jail on aggravated murder charges. The Weber County Attorney’s Office is leading the homicide investigation.
“Tragedies like these rock an entire community, state and even nation. These officers and their families served theirs every day, and they will forever be remembered as heroes,” the press release said.
