REPORT: Suspect Allegedly Shot Deputy, Led Police On High-Speed Chase Down California Freeway

A suspect accused of fatally shooting a San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy in the head Monday sparked a high-speed chase on Southern California freeways, authorities said.

Deputy Andrew Nunez was shot while responding to a domestic violence call around 12:40 p.m. on Hollyhock Drive in Rancho Cucamonga, according to KTLA. Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was pronounced dead at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. After the shooting, the suspect fled on a motorcycle, reaching speeds of more than 120 mph as deputies pursued him westbound on the 210 Freeway, the outlet reported.

“This is very dangerous. He was weaving through traffic. He was driving on the wrong side of the road,” a KTLA anchor said while reacting to live footage of the pursuit.

Video shows a California Highway Patrol officer trailing the suspect at high speed before a black sedan swerved into the motorcycle’s path, sending the rider crashing into the pavement. The driver was an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who used his Toyota Camry to help stop the chase, NBC News reported.

San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus later confirmed the deputy’s involvement in ending the pursuit.

“The pursuit came to a conclusion with an off-duty deputy sheriff who put himself on duty and conducted a legal intervention by hitting the suspect on the motorcycle,” Dicus said at a news conference, according to NBC News. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, NBC Los Angeles reported.

Law enforcement later held a procession for Deputy Nunez, who is survived by his wife, 2-year-old daughter, and unborn child, according to KTLA.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office directed the Daily Caller to a press release confirming the incident when contacted for comment.
