Republican debate: DeSantis challenges Trump to a one-on-one debate

Fresh off the stage of the second Republican National Committee debate in the 2024 election cycle, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) challenged former President Donald Trump to a one-on-one debate.

While Trump has opted to skip both the GOP debates held to date, citing his large lead in the polls, DeSantis said the former president “owes it to our voters.”

“Maybe we can say — since the former president didn’t come here,” DeSantis told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “Maybe he’d be willing to do one with you and I.”

“I think he owes it to our voters to come and make the case,” the Florida governor noted.

DeSantis has agreed to debate Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) on Nov. 30 with Hannity as the moderator. The Republican and Democratic governors will square off in what is being called the “red vs. blue state debate.”

“This is going to be ‘Hannity: One-on-one debate central,'” Hannity responded with a smile, saying that he would reach out to Trump and ask him to participate in such a meeting.

Both Hannity and DeSantis acknowledged that there is a “buzz” about the upcoming debate with Newsom.

Hannity noted that such a forum provides “plenty of breathing room that will lend itself to more conversation.”

DeSantis promised that he will continue to show up to make his case to voters, saying: “No one’s entitled to anything.”
